INEC denies election fraud in Abia

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission has debunked a report accusing its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, of attempts to distort the governorship election results in Abia State.

A portal, Strenuous Blog, had quoted the Returning Officer for Abia, Nnenna Oti, as alleging that she was being forced to do the wrong thing.

According to the portal “The INEC Presiding Officer Abia State, Nnenna Oti had this to say…’I’m Professor Nnenna Oti from Afikpo. I am the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, The people’s mandate shall stand. I have spent all my adult life in pursuit of the ideals of good governance.

We shall stand by the these principles. The pastor in me (she is a Pastor with the RCCG) and the mother in me will not permit me to do anything that will adversely affect the future of our children. I shall do right by God and by man!’

Then to the shock and surprise of everyone in the hall, she said that the INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, personally called her and gave her directives on guidelines to follow in ensuring that Abia governorship election results were collated based on some criteria but that on her own she has decided that the will of Abia voters would not be subverted under her watch.

“At that point, she asked the Administrative Secretary to read the message she said that came from the INEC headquarters Abuja.”

Responding, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the only communication sent to the state Returning Officer was the commission’s directive suspending further collation of results.

Oyekanmi explained “The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu never called the Returning Officer to give her a directive. Rather, the Returning Officer wanted the official communication on the Commission’s decision to suspend the collation of results in Abia State.

“The Chairman then directed that pending the delivery of the hard copies, the soft copies of the Commission’s letter be forwarded immediately to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Enugu State and the Administrative Secretary of Abia State.

“The Returning Officer for Abia State then directed that the content of the letter should be read aloud by the Administrative Secretary in the presence of agents of political parties, observers, the media and security personnel at the Collation Centre.

“This is what is now being mischievously interpreted as a directive to the Returning Officer on some phantom criteria at variance with the approved guidelines. There is nothing like that.

“In fact, the content of the letter is basically the same as the Commission’s Press Release dated Monday 20th March 2023 which has since been uploaded to the Commission’s social media platforms and is already in the public domain.

“The public should disregard the story as fake news.”

Lagos police to prosecute those responsible for fake news

The Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to disregard old videos making the rounds on social media depicting ongoing protests in the state, adding that carriers of fake news will be prosecuted.

In a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, and posted on the command’s Twitter page, the police said the videos were not only old but were also “maliciously” shared to incite residents and cause unrest in the state.

The police also revealed that its cybercrime unit had been mandated to fish out those behind the “deliberate misinformation for immediate prosecution.”

The command further assured residents that their safety remained a priority to the police, adding that measures had been put in place to ensure that Lagos remains peaceful.

The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has called on residents and visitors to Lagos State to disregard old videos purportedly of ongoing riots in different parts of the state being shared on social media by mischief makers. These videos are not only old, but are being maliciously shared by scaremongers to incite and provoke people, cause panic, disharmony and unrest within Lagos State.

While the Cybercrimes Unit of the command has been mandated to fish out the people behind this deliberate misinformation for immediate prosecution, the good people and residents of Lagos State are urged to disregard all forms of messages, especially on social media depicting fictitious, fallacious and divisive claims aimed at jeopardising the peace currently being enjoyed in the state.

“Once again, the command assures Lagosians that all human and operational resources at its disposal have been fully and optimally deployed, especially at vulnerable points, including major markets across the state to ensure a total forestalling of breakdown of law and order in the state. CP Owohunwa therefore urges law abiding residents and visitors to Lagos State to go about their lawful duties without fear or apprehension as their safety and security remain prioritised.”

JAMB Continues Registration for Direct entry and Establishes New Policy

1

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday announced that it had resumed the 2023 Direct Entry registration nationwide.

The Registrar of JAMB, pProfessor Is-haq Oloyede, who made this known at a press briefing on Monday in Abuja, said that the DE registration would come to a close on April 28, 2023.

While lamenting the high level of forgery of A Level certificates used for the registration, Oloyede said the board had introduced new guidelines to check such acts.

He said, “You will recall that the board commenced the 2023 Direct Entry registration on Monday, 20th February, 2023, but had to immediately suspend it following the discovery of the plethora of devices and machinations to circumvent and compromise the standard of A’ Level qualifications required from DE candidates.

Recall that recent joint operations of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on DE qualifications brought to light some of these unsavoury and nefarious activities.

“Bayero University, Kano  has also consistently brought to the fore the high rate of forgery of A’ Level qualifications for DE.
For instance, it was discovered that in previous years, some candidates used unacceptable and forged A’ level certificates/qualifications to register for Direct Entry and eventually got admitted. For example, out of 148 candidates verified by BUK, only six were found to be genuine. By implication, 142 of the results were forged.

“The Board, concerned stakeholders and institutions are working assiduously to detect such and the ones already found are being dealt with according to the provisions of the law.”

Speaking further, Oloyede said the Board would only  accept 13 qualifications/certificates for the 2023 Direct Entry registration, which include; first degree, university diploma, Higher National Diploma, Ordinary National Diploma /National Diploma and Nigeria Certificate in Education.

Others are Interim Joint Matriculation Board A’ Level, Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board A’ Level,
NABTEB Advanced National Business Certificate, NABTEB Advanced National Technical Certificate,  NABTEB GCE-A’ Level (2015 – 2021), Higher Islamic Studies Certificate by NBAIS, International Baccalaureate  and the  National Registered Nurse /National Registered Midwife.

He, however, said that the 127 candidates who had earlier registered for the 2023 DE before the exercise was suspended would be requested to return to the registration centres and update their application.

The JAMB boss also revealed that the data bank put in place to address challenges associated with the A’ Level qualifications
had now been renamed as ‘Nigeria Post-secondary Education Data System’.

On the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Oloyede said JAMB had introduced new measures in the conduct of the exam and called for understanding.

“The Board has instituted some measures which are to be deployed during the 2023 UTME exercise. Despite the fact that the innovations have been tested and certified, yet it is not unlikely that some hiccups might spring up when the new technology is deployed live and nationwide. We therefore solicit your support and understanding as we promptly address any unforeseen circumstances.

“One major feature of the new dispensation is that no examination would be allowed to take place after one hour of its scheduled start time because the Board has discovered that some of the problems reported at the centres are contrived to delay the commencement of a session in some centres with a view to securing undue advantage for the delayed candidates.

Consequently, any session that, for whatever reason(s), could not take off within one hour of its schedule is automatically rescheduled. When such occurs, affected candidates are expected to file out of the examination hall into the waiting hall and await the new scheduled time and place which most likely would be the same or following day,” he said
