#Nigeriaelections 2023: Obasanjo not credible, says Sowore

0

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the latter’s call for the suspension of the ongoing collation of presidential election results.

Obasanjo had, in a letter dated February 27, raised the alarm over what he termed “danger looming ahead” and called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to prevail on the Independent National Electoral Commission to halt the process of collation of the presidential election results in order to address the various concerns raised by Nigerians over the conduct of the election.

In a reaction to the ex-president’s letter, Sowore, who took to his Twitter page, alleged that Obasanjo organised some of the most fraudulent elections as president of Nigeria and, therefore, had no credibility to talk about fraudulent elections.

The publisher of Sahara Reporters wrote, “Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has no credibility to talk about fraudulent elections. Ex-Pres Obasanjo organised some of the most fraudulent elections during his 8 year tenure as President of Nigeria. He laid the foundation for the shambolic elections that has become Nigeria’s lot now!”

The returning officer for the state,  Charles Esimone, who announced the results on Tuesday in Owerri said that Obi scored  352,904 while Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress scored 66, 171 votes while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party got 30,044 while Rabiu Kwankwaso got 1,536 votes.

The returning officer said that the result of the Njaba LGA was not collated because of violence.

PDP, LP, ADC, demand for re-election, call for Yakubu’s resignation

0

The Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party and the African Democratic Party have asked the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, to step aside.

The three parties in a joint press conference on Tuesday, in Abuja alleged that the February 2023 presidential election was marred with violence, rigging and intimidation of voters.

The parties demanded the conduct of a fresh election.

“We are therefore constrained on this development to state that INEC compromised the integrity of this elections even before collation commenced at the polling units.

“Section 60 sub-section 5 of the Electoral Act says that the presiding officer shall transfer the results, including total number of accredited voter and the results of the ballots in a manner as prescribed by the commission.

“A failure to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the guidelines makes it imperative that all results recently uploaded on the IReV portal must be updated before they are announced.

“INEC went back on that promise…This election is not free and far from being fair and transparent.”

We shall not be part of the electoral process currently going on at the National Collation Centre and we demand that this sham of an election be immediately cancelled.

“We also call for a fresh election to be carried out in accordance to the laid down INEC procedure.”

We therefore call on Yakubu to step aside from his role,” the LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, who delivered the position of the three opposition parties, said.

The parties asked Yakubu to step aside from his role as INEC Chairman for a “credible personality” outside the commission to take his place and oversee the process that would be acceptable to all stakeholders and will restore the confidence of the international community, the democratic process and institutions.

We have a responsibility to the millions of Nigerians who put their faith in us and our presidential candidates to defend our country from the forces that seek to tear us apart.

We are calling on President Mohammadu Buhari to stand by his promise to Nigerians to leave a legacy of free, fair, transparent and credible elections to the country

President Buhari this is the time of great test of your integrity use your office to save Nigeria from this electoral mismanagement and save your legacy that seek to mar your democratic legacy

We call on Nigerians to join us in defending the democracy of our country

#NigeriaElection 2023: Obasanjo’s call to cancel selfish and provocative elections – FG

0

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, appealed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to truncate the 2023 general election with “his inciting, self-serving and provocative letter on the elections.”

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi, said the former President’s call that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should prevail on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, to stop the election result collation process and rectify the allegations raised against INEC from many quarters was nothing but a calculated attempt to undermine the electoral process.

The opposition parties — the Labour Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party, under which Obasanjo led the country from 1999 to 2007— had accused INEC of complicity in alleged malpractices during the polls.

The minister expressed shock and disbelief that a former President could throw around unverified claims and amplify wild allegations picked up from the street against the electoral process.

Though masquerading as an unbiased and concerned elder statesman, former President Obasanjo is in reality a known partisan who is bent on thwarting, by subterfuge, the choice of millions of Nigerian voters,” he said.

Mohammed alleged that Obasanjo, in his time, “organised perhaps the worst election since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, hence he is the least qualified to advise a President whose determined effort to leave a legacy of free, fair, credible and transparent election is well acknowledged within and outside Nigeria.”

He said, ”As the whole nation waits with bated breath for the result of last Saturday’s national elections, amid unnecessary tension created by professional complainants and political jesters, what is expected from a self-respecting elder statesman are words and actions that douse tension and serve as a soothing balm.

”Instead, former President Obasanjo used his unsolicited letter to insinuate, or perhaps wish for, an inconclusive election and a descent into anarchy; used his time to cast aspersions on electoral officials who are unable to defend themselves, while surreptitiously seeking to dress his personal choice in the garb of the people’s choice. This is duplicitous.”

The minister noted that instead of calling for the cancellation of the election, those aggrieved by the election result should seek redress in the courts.

With a deployment of over 1,265,227 electoral officials, the infusion of technology to enhance the electoral process and the logistical nightmare of sending election materials across our vast country, INEC seems to be availing itself creditably, going by the preliminary reports of the ECOWAS Electoral Observation Mission and the Commonwealth Observer Group, among other groups that observed the election.

”Therefore, those arrogating to themselves the power to cancel an election and unilaterally fix a date for a new one, ostensibly to ameliorate perceived electoral infractions should please exercise restraint and allow the official electoral body to conclude its duty by announcing the results of the 2023 national elections.

After that, anyone who is aggrieved must follow the stipulated legal process put in place to adjudicate electoral disputes, instead of threatening fire and conjuring apocalypse,” he said.
