John Boyega Makes a Case for Minimalist Streetwear

0

John Boyega recently stepped out for The Daily Show With Trevor Noah in New york clad in stellar minimalistic garb to promote his upcoming movie Breaking.

The first look was an all-white ensemble featuring a pristine white blouson jacket worn over a crisp white tee, belted high-waisted trousers and a pair of silky smooth sneakers.

Out on the streets, he took an opposite yet stylish turn in an all-black ensemble, consisting of sleek cargo pants, a chunky black crew neck jumper and a set of Celine shoes. The British-Nigerian actor accessorised both looks with a gold necklace featuring a key pendant.

In a statement sent to Ranks Africa, Abudu said, “I believe in learning and understanding any major assignment I undertake. Directing is an art form that takes years to master, so I’m beginning with baby steps. I have written two short films that I will be directing– ‘Her Perfect Life’ and ‘Iyawo Mi (My Wife)’. The latter is a predominantly Yoruba language film.

“Although the stories are fictional, they highlight the mental health challenges, hardly spoken about in Nigeria, but which many people deal with all over the world. Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, income or social class, and they are on the increase.”

‘Her Perfect Life’ is about a woman who seems to have the perfect life— a flourishing career, a growing business, a loving husband and two beautiful children— yet is contemplating suicide. It stars actors such as Pearl Thusi, Joseph Benjamin, Omawunmi Dada, Uzo Osimpka and Mary Lazarus.

On the other hand, ‘Iyawo Mi (My Wife)’ is about a man who arrives home one night to find a horror awaiting him. His wife, Eniola, seems to have gone mad; hallucinating, screaming at their children and neighbours, and threatening to kill everyone. He then takes matters into his own hands, with tragic consequences. It features Adedimeji Lateef, Bolaji Ogunmola, Segun Arinze and Jude Chukwuka.

The projects are supported by the British High Commission and the French Embassy in Lagos, while the sponsors include UBA Foundation, Wale Tinubu,  Artsplit Limited and Sporting Lagos.

WHY WE CHOSE OWERRI AS BON 2022 DESTINATION – SEUN OLOKETUYI

0

The executive producer of the Best of Nollywood Awards, popularly known as BON Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, has revealed the reason why the traveling award event would be taking place in Imo State’s capital for the 2022 edition.

In a release made available to the media, Oloketuyi explained that the history of Nollywood is incomplete without Imo state and Iweka Road, which used to be a major distribution getaway for Nollywood productions during the hay days of digital video disc sales.

In addition, hosting the prestigious awards event in the state is a good opportunity for Nollywood practitioners to appreciate the good work Governor Hope Uzodinma has been doing in ensuring that the Nigerian make-believe industry thrives in the state since holding the helms of affairs two years ago.

With the unveiling of the nominees’ list on October 15 and the veteran Nollywood practitioner, Francis Onwochei, as the new head of the jury, it’s no gainsaying that Nollywood practitioners are excitedly getting ready to be part of the event.

This year’s BON Awards will be held at the International Conference  Centre recently renovated by the state government on December 3, 2022.

“We’ve taken the 14th edition of the awards event a notch higher by ensuring that it’s at par with the best of what is obtainable in the world and it can only get better from here,” Oloketuyi disclosed.

Bayern and Barcelona will also come up against Inter Milan in Group C, which is completed by the Czech champions Viktoria Plzen.

Bayern beat Barcelona 8-2 in a one-off quarter-final in Lisbon in 2020, while the Catalans also lost 3-0 twice to the Germans last season as they were eliminated in the group stage.

Lewandowski, 34, signed for Barcelona during the close season for a fee that could reach 50 million euros ($49.9m) after scoring 344 goals in eight years at Bayern.

Haaland left Dortmund for Premier League champions City in the close season. Those sides will also face Sevilla and Danish champions FC Copenhagen in Group G.

Last season’s beaten finalists Liverpool will play Ajax, Napoli and Rangers in Group A, while reigning champions Real Madrid will face Celtic as well as RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk in Group F.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain — who again start among the favourites to win a trophy that has continued to escape them since the Qatari takeover of more than a decade ago — will meet Juventus as well as Benfica and Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa in Group H.

Chelsea, winners in 2021, will take on Serie A champions AC Milan as well as Red Bull Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb in Group E, while Tottenham Hotspur will face last season’s Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt along with Sporting Lisbon and Marseille in Group D.

Porto and Atletico Madrid meet for the second season running in Group B, which also featured Bayer Leverkusen and Belgian champions Club Brugge.

This season’s group stage will begin with the first round of games on September 6 and 7.

ASUU rejects N10,000 varsity support levy by parents

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected the proposed payment of N10, 000 per session by each parent to assist the Federal Government in making more funds available for universities.

On Wednesday reported that the National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria proposed the levy and sought an audience with the government over the lingering strike by ASUU.

“We have submitted a letter to the Office of the Education Minister, seeking an audience where we hope to discuss a proposal.

“We are proposing a sum of N10, 000 per parent every session that will be directly paid to the universities. That will be our own contribution apart from other statutory payments in making more funds available to the universities.

“It can be called parent support levy for universities. We are at the receiving end of the industrial action. We plead with the ASUU and Federal Government to immediately resolve their differences,” NAPTAN’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ademola Ekundayo,

But reacting to the proposed levy on Thursday, ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the parents should intervene by joining the body in mounting pressure on the apex government.

Osodeke made the call while speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday.

I think what this association should be doing is to tell the government to perform its function. They should put pressure on the government to use Nigerians’ money to fund education as it is done in other countries.

“We can’t be calling ourselves the giant of Africa and we are the worst in education. You see students from Nigeria going to Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and other small countries to study but nobody from these countries is coming to Nigeria to study.

“So they should add to the pressure coming from ASUU to ensure that the government prioritise education. That is more important than the N10,000”.

The cold war between actresses Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham

0

The cold war between actresses Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham appears unchanged as the latter ignored the former’s birthday on Wednesday.

Many colleagues and industry stakeholders on Tuesday celebrated Akindele, who clocked 45.

But Toyin Abrahim, who has been on good terms with the Omo Ghetto actress didn’t send any felicitations, fuelling insinuations all was still not well between them.

In a recent interview, Abraham noted that Akindele is one of the few people in the movie industry that she looks up to and respects a lot.

She even went as far as stating how she kneels down to greet her whenever she sees Funke Akindele in public as a sign of respect.

Toyin Abraham snubbed Akindele’s birthday but sent birthday wishes to actress Lola OJ who was a year on the same day.

Happy birthday my darling sis @lolaoj God bless your new age sis,” Abraham wrote in a captioned of a photo of Lola OJ she posted on her verified Instagram page.

This move also got fans talking, wondering why she refused to wish Funke Akindele a happy birthday too.

Police commission workers threaten indefinite strike

0

Workers at the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday issued a notice of indefinite strike to the management of the commission over breach of conditions.

The workers, in a leaked letter written by the joint union congress, PSC chapter and addressed to Musiliu Smith, PSC chairman, said the indefinite strike will commence on August 29.

The letter was signed by Adoyi Adoyi, chairman of joint union congress, PSC chapter, Abayomi Anthony, chairman of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Yusuf Nasidi, secretary of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and Remi Ogundeji, secretary of NCSU.

The letter reads: “You may wish to recall that the Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission had embarked on a 3-day warning strike on Monday 24 January, 2022, which was suspended in national interest in order to embrace dialogue and reconciliation.

“As a responsible union, we make bold to state that all the conditions necessary for continuous working harmony have been breached by the management, hence our resort to continue with our agitation until our earlier agreements are fully implemented.

Following from the above therefore, the union and the entire staff do hereby serve a notice of indefinite strike to the Management, beginning on Monday, 29 August 2022.”

The development comes amid the disagreement between Usman Baba, inspector-general of police, and the PSC over recruitment of constables into the Nigeria Police Force.

The Nation reported that the NPF dismissed an advertisement by PSC calling for applicants to apply as constables in the force.

Owing to NPF’s protest, the PSC suspended the 2022 recruitment of constables into the force.

FG Advises Nigerians Against Travelling To Northern Cyprus

0

Abike Dabiri-Erewa spoke to reporters at the State House in Abuja on August 25, 2022.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa has warned Nigerians not to travel to Northern Cyprus.

Speaking to State House correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, Dabiri-Erewa said there is little the Federal Government can do to diplomatically resolve issues in the territory because Northern Cyprus is not recognised by the international community except Turkey.

The warning comes amid reports many Nigerian are being killed in Northern Cyprus.

Dabiri-Erewa also urged Nigerians in Diaspora not to be afraid to invest in the country because of insecurity.

While admitting that the country’s insecurity challenge is a source of concern, she said it is only temporary because of stiff measures currently employed by the Federal Government to tackle the situation.

She said the commission recorded over $20 billion in daispora remittances for 2021.
