Abuja rocked by gunfire as rival NURTW factions collide

0

Chaos erupted in the Garki area of the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday as a violent clash unfolded between two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on Sapele Crescent, off Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Garki II, Abuja.

This incident underscores an ongoing dispute within the NURTW, a situation that observers deem in need of immediate federal government intervention to prevent further deterioration of law and order, particularly in the nation’s capital.

Reports indicate that the clash erupted when supporters of NURTW President, Tajudeen Baruwa, marched towards the union’s national headquarters, currently occupied by the Lagos Park Management Committee led by Tajudeen Agbede.

Baruwa had previously sought the involvement of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Labour Congress to resolve the situation, but these efforts proved unsuccessful.

He vowed, “We shall henceforth not hesitate to defend our mandate with the last drop of our blood,” accusing former NURTW leaders of illegally occupying the National Secretariat of the union.

Baruwa emphasized that only a court of competent jurisdiction can invalidate his mandate and urged aggrieved members to follow due process and seek legal redress to avoid potential anarchy.

He further alleged that the former president of the union, Najeem Yasin, and Agbede, the former National Vice President, held unauthorized meetings with selected past leaders of the union.

Baruwa called upon the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, to intervene in the matter, expressing concerns that the police seemed to be favoring the Lagos Park Management Committee.

Although the exact number of casualties, if any, could not be confirmed at the time of this report, eyewitnesses revealed that members of the transport union fired several gunshots into the air during the conflict, heightening tension in the area.

When contacted about the situation, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, directed inquiries to the Force Headquarters.

However, the Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not respond to our correspondent’s queries.

The WHO reports a significant 55% reduction in malaria-related mortality in Nigeria

0

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the Regional Director for Africa at the World Health Organization (WHO), revealed on Monday that Nigeria has seen a significant 55% reduction in malaria-related deaths.

This announcement was made during the launch of the 2022 Nigeria Malaria Report held in Abuja.

Dr. Moeti also highlighted Nigeria’s progress in addressing HIV and tuberculosis. Between 2015 and 2021, Nigeria achieved two out of the three 95-95-95 goals for HIV control. Additionally, tuberculosis intervention coverage has improved, leading to an increased detection rate over the same period.

Dr. Moeti emphasized the substantial malaria burden in the African region, accounting for approximately 95% of all global malaria cases and 96% of malaria-related deaths in 2021.

Nigeria, with about 27% of the world’s malaria cases, has shown remarkable advancements. Malaria incidence has decreased by 26% since 2000, dropping from 413 cases per 1000 to 302 cases per 1000 in 2021.

Moreover, malaria deaths have decreased by 55%, going from 2.1 per 1000 population to 0.9 per 1000 population.

She identified several factors contributing to the ongoing disease burden, including Nigeria’s large population, challenges in scaling up interventions, suboptimal surveillance systems capturing less than 40% of malaria data, insufficient funding for comprehensive state-level interventions, and a preference for private healthcare with limited regulation among the population.

Dr. Moeti emphasized the importance of gathering critical data and information for evidence-based decision-making in tackling malaria and other diseases.

The 2022 Nigeria Malaria Report provides crucial insights into the country’s malaria status.

Furthermore, she called for the Regional Office’s support in generating data and evidence for similar reports on various diseases and conditions.

This approach would enable countries to monitor interventions at both national and sub-national levels, facilitating targeted allocation of resources from donors and governments to combat both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

In response, Prof. Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing health governance in Nigeria.

He pledged collaboration with development partners and the private sector to pool resources for improved health outcomes.

The ministry also plans to retrain approximately 120,000 health workers and update their practice standards as part of its efforts to reduce the disease burden and improve overall healthcare in the country.

Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has dropped hints about potentially retiring from the music scene.

A substantial offer recently presented to the 32-year-old has led him to contemplate a break from music, similar to the sabbatical taken by the wealthy Barbadian-American artist Rihanna.

Burna Boy expressed that the significant contract is making him question his dedication to music.

He shared these thoughts on his Instagram story last Sunday.

“With the numbers I’m seeing on this contract, these next years of my life are about to really show if I really love doing music.

“God must really want to test my love for music. I just might bounce on y’all like Rihanna.”

Burna Boy achieves a groundbreaking African milestone on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

Davido, who invoices in US Dollars, revealed that performing in four shows per month yields him an impressive income ranging between $2 million and $3 million.

IG establishes a committee dedicated to overseeing firearm licensing and regulations

0

In accordance with the Firearms Act and existing laws, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has announced the formation of a special committee tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of firearms licensing and regulations within the Nigeria Police Force.

Egbetokun disclosed on Monday that the committee’s objective is to thoroughly evaluate the current procedures and regulations surrounding firearms licensing, with the goal of improving their efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

The Force Headquarters also stated that the police will actively engage with relevant stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organizations, and field specialists, to ensure a comprehensive and well-informed review process.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, Egbetokun has issued a stern warning against individuals involved in the unlawful possession of arms and light weapons, emphasizing the serious threat that the illegal proliferation of firearms poses to the nation’s peace and stability.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force is resolutely committed to combatting the illicit manufacturing, sale, possession, and use of firearms, underscoring that possessing firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits not only violates the law but also endangers society.

It was assured that the Nigeria Police Force will vigorously pursue and prosecute those engaged in such unlawful activities to the fullest extent of the law.

Furthermore, the Inspector General of Police has directed State Commissioners of Police, supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands, and tactical squads to initiate a comprehensive crackdown on the illegal production, sale, possession, and use of prohibited firearms nationwide.

He has also urged all Nigerians to report any suspicious activities related to firearms to their local police divisions or through the various NPF social media platforms for swift action.

Notably, the Inspector General, recognizing that licensing for firearms may exacerbate insecurity, has reaffirmed the police’s ban on issuing gun licenses, with the possibility of revisiting or revising the ban in the future.

The Force Headquarters has announced that the Nigeria Police Force has ceased issuing licenses for small arms due to the significant proliferation of illegal firearms in the country.

Egbetokun made this announcement during a meeting with members of the Police Management Team, including Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police, and Commissioners of Police at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Egbetokun emphasized, “We are working to reduce the number of firearms in circulation.

There is an overabundance of firearms, and continuing to issue licenses for them might exacerbate the issues we are striving to resolve.”

However, he also indicated that the ban on firearms issuance might be reconsidered in the future.

“For now, there is a temporary ban on issuing firearms licenses.

We may revisit it later, but at this time, we are not issuing firearms licenses nationwide.”

It’s important to note that the Firearms Act has been the primary instrument for regulating firearms in Nigeria for several years.

The Act stipulates that no individual may possess or have control over any firearm or ammunition unless they hold a license from either the President or the Inspector General of Police.

Uche Ebere characterizes Kie Kie’s reason for sharing expenses with their spouse as ‘unfavorable

0

Veteran actress Uche Ebere has criticized her younger colleague Kie Kie for her ‘negative’ attitude towards sharing expenses with her husband.

During a recent podcast conversation with Toke Makinwa, the skit maker, whose real name is Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, suggested that married couples should split household expenses equitably.

She proposed, “So, when we want to have disagreements, you’ll handle one aspect, and I’ll handle another.

You carry the chair; I’ll take the television.

You deal with the roof; I’ll manage the floor.
We share everything equally.

You can’t tell me to leave my own home.”

Kie Kie’s perspective on splitting bills in marriage garnered various reactions, with some people arguing that what works for one couple may not work for another.

Uche Ebere contended that Kie Kie’s mindset about marriage was problematic because it already considered divorce as an option.

She emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook on matrimony.

In response, Ebere expressed, “She undermined the entire valid point by mentioning, ‘So when they’re splitting, like in divorce or separation, the man will take this, while she’ll take that.’

This implies that she’s in the marriage with the mindset of divorce or separation, which isn’t ideal.

Build your home with positivity; that’s the way to go. Trust in God’s guidance.
