LASU students shut their gates against “abuse” by soldiers.

The students of Lagos State University, Ojo, have shut both gates leading to the school in protest against soldiers torturing some students last week.

A parent who could not exit the campus told The PUNCH that the students locked up both the Iyana-Iba and Ojo gates, thereby preventing both vehicular and pedestrian movement.

He said, “We have been here for some hours. The students locked up both gates. Everywhere is filled with vehicles trying to come in and exit. The security men said the students shut the gates because their executives and some students were beaten by soldiers last week. We are all waiting at the gate, no movement.”

The institution’s Public Relations Officer promised to make enquiries on the cause of the protest and get back to our correspondent. But as of the time of filing this report, he had yet to reply to our enquiry as promised.

House Of Phoebe Arts engaged pupils of FOS Brill Pupils on World book Day 2023

0

House of Phoebe Arts collaborated with Pupils from FOS Brill School on World Book Day in 2023.

In 2023, House of Phoebe Arts partnered with the bright minds of FOS Brill School to celebrate World Book Day. Together, they embarked on a journey to explore the wonders of literature and ignite a passion for reading among the students.

It was a literary hour, an engaging book party featuring beautifully dressed cute children, whose excitement skyrocketed at the sight of different tastes of book genres

World Book Day is an opportunity for children to learn about different characters, books, and costumes, and also a creative model for developing their reading, writing, and their cognitive skills in the classroom.

We decided to engage them in reading aesthetics through readathon competition, vocabulary parade, bookie costume, book gifts, bookie games, story walk and loads of fun.

We have a goal, “reviving and igniting the love of reading in our upcoming generation”. The advent of technology has changed the rate at which children interact with the pages of books, so one inventive stride to stir them off the screen and get them cue in to “no screen time” is to get it on a reloaded fun book affair, as we appreciate and celebrate the treasures found in reading. This is a great opportunity for children to celebrate in style and understand why reading and writing are so vital for future rewards.

On a day like this, which happens every first day in March, every year, we decided to join the whole world in building up teams of bookworms, through exposures to discoveries in shelf loads of book. There is always something to learn about books. We taught them parts of a book, how to read a book, information on copyright, letter recognition with objects attached for kindergartners, world book day songs, mouthful of tasty pop corn and sweet drinks to roll with.

Did anyone miss this?

It was FUN RELOADED AROUND BOOKS!

Every child deserves the best hand, to boost their intelligence, memory, vocabulary, confidence and. What better resource can do these than books? Research have shown that kids who are not exposed to reading at home, are prone to “million-word gap” at school. How well do parents help their children become word collectors, will reflect on their vocabulary bank, presentation strength, logical thinking, emotional intelligence and communication development.

Reading should start from the tender stage, from pictures to one word, until they become better readers, a task for every well meaning adult. Age appropriate texts will make a huge difference, while audio visual resources will even speed up the job. As they recognize animal noises and sounds, identify objects and more. Conversation about things to read.

The climax was our book review session. The younger reviewers were all shades of flowing cruise with a group of conscious and critically woke readers. What a great way to promote reading, our token to every child out there!

Ex-Elizade varsity VC bags five years over $1.2m fraud

0

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the state capital, has sentenced a former Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Prof. Adekunle Oloyede, to five years imprisonment for $1.2 million fraud.

Justice Aderemi Adegoroye jailed the professor after finding him guilty on all six counts of false pretences, stealing and fraud contrary to the anti-graft laws of the state.

The accused, Oloyede, was said to have fraudulently obtained the sum of $720,000 for the construction of a 500-bed space at the school, while he also obtained the sum of $250,000, $150,000, and $620,000 at different times.

The money was collected from Mike Ade Investment limited for Duro Global Property under the false pretence of using the amount for the construction of a hostel for the institution.
The Professor of Medical Engineering was dragged before the Court by the State Legal Officer, represented by Mr O.E Akintan, who told the court of the professor to stand accused of conspiracies to steal and to obtain by false pretence contrary which are punishable under section 516 of the criminal code.

In the evidence before the court, several amounts running into millions in foreign currency was paid into the account linked to Oloyede and his cronies for the importation of panel for the construction of a hostel for students of the university.

The court heard that despite the payment for the panel and for the shipment of the materials from Australia to Ilara-Mokin in Ondo State, the former Vice Chancellor failed to execute the projects, leading to his arrest and prosecution for alleged fraud by the state government.

Oloyede, while denying the allegation of fraud against him, said he made a presentation of his ideas and innovation of making the school world-class to Chief Ade Ojo, saying the founder was impressed.

He said one of his ideas was to have a revenue-generating portfolio and it was the idea that brought in the suggestion of the school having a factory to manufacture panels for building affordable houses.

The Counsel to Oloyede, Chief Kunle Ijalana, said the matter before the court was contractual and not criminal in nature contrary to the charges brought against the accused and, therefore, asked the court to dismiss the charges.
the embattled VC had some time in 2015 visited the institution ahead of his September appointment date as the second substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.

During the visit, Oloyede had seen a new 512-bed male hostel project whose contract had just been awarded for $1.8m.

Even though a contractor had been mobilised to the site, the institution said Oloyede advised and persuaded the university’s founder, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, to discontinue the project and adopt a new technology called PIR Panel Building Technology.

According to him, that would make the completion of the building to be faster and ready by August 2015, while also saving 40 per cent of the original contract sum.

Fascinated by the new technology, Ade-Ojo had agreed to adopt it, believing that the hostel would be ready by August 2015, ahead of the students’ resumption that year.

Based on the incoming VC’s recommendation, Ade-Ojo, between March and July 2015, transferred a total sum of $1.2m to an Australia-based firm that was introduced by Oloyede — Duro Global PTY Ltd.

However, Justice Adegoroye said the prosecution has proved the charge against the accused beyond reasonable doubt and consequently found him guilty as charged, sentencing the accused to five years with an option of a fine of N350.000.00.

The Court also sentenced Oloyede to another three years with an option of a fine of N250.000.00 and said the prison terms shall run cumulatively.

Justice Adegoroye ordered that in facilitating restorative justice as provided under Section 290(6) ACJL of the state 2015, the defendant should refund the sum of $131,500 being the balance obtained from Chief Ade Ojo and the money should be paid within six months of failure which the defendant shall serve additional one year in prison.

The World Bank has donated $12 billion in food aid to Nigeria and other countries.

0

The World Bank has disbursed at least $12bn, almost half of which was to Africa, to help beneficiary counties cope with food shortage.

In a new report titled “Food Security Update | World Bank Response to Rising Food Insecurity” the bank noted that domestic food prices remained high all over the world, especially in low and middle income countries.

According to the bank, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, trade-related policies imposed by countries have surged, and the global food crisis has been partially made worse by the growing number of food trade restrictions put in place by countries with a goal of increasing domestic supply and reducing prices.

The bank also said a $30bn relief package, spread over a period of 15 months, including $12bn in new projects, will be rolled out to help counties cope with food insecurity.

According to the report, up to 205 million people are expected to face acute food insecurity and to be in need of urgent assistance in 45 countries.

The report read partly, “The most recent Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Bulletin released by the Food and Agriculture Organisation revealed mixed trends for international cereal prices in January 2023.

“World wheat prices fell in January for a third consecutive month; international coarse grain prices remained mostly unchanged; and international rice prices rose at an accelerated pace in January 2023.”

Overall, FAO’s analysis indicates that high prices have persisted for the past three months despite some evidence of easing from 2022 peaks in certain countries, with rice price hikes mostly responsible for sustained high cereal prices.”

Beyond the fiscal stimulus, the World Bank Group stated it had partnered the G7 Presidency and co-convened the Global Alliance for Food Security, which aimed to catalyse an immediate and concerted response to the unfolding global hunger crisis.

The report added that the alliance had developed the publicly accessible Global Food and Nutrition Security Dashboard, which provided timely information for global and local decision-makers to help improve coordination of the policy and financial response to the food crisis.
