TUNDE KELANI’S AYINLA WINS ISAAC OLUWOLE DELANO PRICE FOR YORUBA STUDIES IN THE CREATIVE AND PERFORMANCE CATEGORY

The Supervisory Board and Distinguished Jury for the Isaac Oluwole Delano Prize for Yoruba Studies 2022 are delighted to announce two winners in two categories for the Prize this year.

The winning entries are Akin Ogundiran’s The Yoruba: A New History (Indiana University Press, 2020), in the book category, and Tunde Kelani’s Ayinla (Mainframe, 2021) in the creative and performance category.

The prize includes a citation, a certificate, $1,000 to be shared equally among both awardees, and public acknowledgment at the annual Convocation Ceremony at Babcock University.

Tunde Kelani, Ayinla (Mainframe, 2021)

Making a blockbuster movie is no mean feat. The arduous production process, the continuous refining of creative representations to ensure they project the finest of details, and the place of good storytelling, continuity, and the ability to connect with and sustain the audience’s attention cannot be overstated.

Thus, when we consider Ayinla, the latest of Tunde Kelani’s movies, as a blockbuster, we should not only consider it as one of the top five highest-grossing movies in the Nollywood industry but also as a masterpiece that has registered its place as the defining point for biographical adaptations in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Another factor that lends awe to Ayinla’s widespread success is that it is dominantly presented in the Yoruba language. Despite this, the movie found widespread acceptance among viewers. It was a hit in cinemas and has been among the top 10 trending movies on Netflix for weeks, further testifying to the strength of the movie’s broad appeal and how quickly it gained popularity among Africans and other lovers of good productions.

The things that make Ayinla deserving of praise pale compared to the movie’s awesomeness as a work of art. The movie demonstrates the artistic and creative ingenuity of the cast and crew, especially the producer and the writer, for an apt summation of the life of Ayinla, the musician, in such a eulogizing way, and the director, for the intricate selection of the cast.

Autopsy Confirms Chrisland Student Was Electrocuted – Lagos’ Mother

Aggrieved parents of the 12-year-old pupil of Chrisland International School, Whitney Adeniran, who recently died in strange circumstances during the school’s inter-house sports activities at the Agege Stadium, Lagos State, have said the result of the autopsy on their daughter revealed that she died of electrocution.

Whitney’s mother, Blessing, in a live broadcast on Instagram on Wednesday, confirmed the development.

She said, “The autopsy result is out and Desola was electrocuted. My daughter died of electrocution. I have been subjected to trauma for the past two weeks.

Tomorrow will make it three weeks since my baby died. The school made me think I was crazy. They started pushing the narrative of she was sick; she was sickly. They sent letters and publications out.

“People insulted me and my family. My child was electrocuted to death. I told the school I don’t want trouble. All I want is answers. They came to my house and knelt down.”

Also, the deceased father, Michael, in a text message sent to our correspondent on Thursday, said he confirmed the report of the autopsy from the officer-in-charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, noting that the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panti, told him Whitney was killed by 600 volts of electricity.

The text read, “The autopsy is out. I just finished speaking to the DCP, Panti. He assured me that they have received the result. The pathology department has confirmed it. My daughter was electrocuted with 600 volts of electricity.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted to authenticate the claim of the family on the result of the autopsy, said the result of the autopsy was yet to be out.

Hundeyin said the command was in constant communication with the state pathologists and criminal investigation department, who confirmed that the report of the autopsy was not out.

He said, “I just confirmed that the autopsy report is not out. We have been in touch with the pathologists and I can confirm to you that the report is not out.”

Meanwhile, in a statement on Thursday, the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Alo Grace, said the post-mortem report revealed Whitney’s cause of death to be Asphyxia and electrocution.
The statement indicated further that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions had been instructed by the AG to issue legal advice on the matter with immediate effect.

“The Lagos State Government has received the post-mortem report dated March 1, 2023, issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, in respect of Adeniran Omodesola Whitney, who was until her demise, a student of Chrisland School, Opebi, Lagos.

“The statement from the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), states that the post-mortem report revealed the cause of death to be Asphyxia and Electrocution.

The Lagos State Government commiserates with the deceased family while reassuring Lagosians that anybody found culpable would immediately be charged to court”, the statement added.

Meanwhile, no magistrate had been named nor date fixed to conduct the coroner inquest into the cause of death of Whitney whose remains were reportedly laid to rest on Thursday.

Elections: Diaspora organization calls on INEC to fix unrest.

0

The Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians and its partner organisations have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to address hitches recorded during the February 25 polls ahead of the March 11 polls.

INEC conducted the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The results of the election across the country have since generated controversy.

Reacting to the conduct of the polls, the Chairman, Board of OAN, Mr Olayinka DanSalami, in a statement signed on behalf of 20 Nigerian organisations, urged INEC to correct the errors ahead of the March 11 governorship and state assembly elections.

DanSalami said Nigerians were within their rights to have such concerns in the just-concluded elections.

We hold INEC largely accountable for the tension in the land. INEC had promised that the new biometric voter identification technology would make the election the most credible yet, but malfunctions, long delays and slow results characterised the elections and have fueled the accusations of fraud.

This must be corrected before the governorship election on March 11, 2023. The commission must be seen to be above board for stakeholders to have faith in the electoral process,’’ he said.

According to him, the organisations took notice of the discontent among some Nigerians over the outcome of the election results.

He said they noticed that many Nigerians, candidates and some political parties had expressed frustrations about the manner in which the process was conducted.

“They are clearly within their rights to express their grievances based on the high expectations they had in the electoral process and the assurances given by the electoral umpires.’’

Nevertheless, he said, they urged all candidates to emphasise to their supporters the unacceptability of violence in connection with the election.

Political parties, candidates and their supporters aggrieved by the outcome of the election should ventilate their grievances within the ambit of the law to seek reprieve.

“We must guard against inflammatory statements that can stoke violence at this critical time in our country’s transition,’’ the official said.

DanSalami said the organisations called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), state governors, election officials and security personnel to honour their international commitments and constitutional principles by encouraging, enabling and protecting free and fair elections.

He said the violence that emanated from parts of the country was senseless and a great threat to the credible electoral process.

There is a lot at stake in this general election. The election is a consequential one that would determine the fate of over 200 million people, and impact on the African continent and the Black race.

“We affirm that Nigeria and Nigerians must remain as one and must not be divided along ethnic, religious and sectional lines.‘’

According to him, they are appealing to Nigerians to be cautious and ventilate their grievances over the competitive presidential and National Assembly elections within the ambit of the law.

He said that the organisations congratulated the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, Vice-President-elect, Kashim Shettima, and all the National Assembly members-elect.

“The 2023 general election is a critical and consequential election. In the build-up to the poll, we urge Nigerians to elect candidates they could trust to run the affairs of the country in their best interests.

in the homeland over the past few days because the 2023 election is of special interest to the diaspora Nigerians as we are a very important demographic.

“We send billions of dollars back home annually to boost the economy and to support our relations on whom we also have significant influence in this election

We also reached out to our families and associates back home and used our influence to encourage them to vote while some diasporas took the pains to travel home to register and to vote at the election.‘’

While he acknowledged that everybody could not win, he however said Nigeria and the majority of Nigerians won by having the opportunity to participate in the poll.

“We like to commend the youths for coming out in large numbers to exercise their civic responsibilities without fear.

We, therefore, saw the outcome of the election first as victory for all Nigerians rather than for an individual or a political party for obvious reasons.

“Our country and the people have chosen the Presidential democracy as a form of government through which the country should be governed after decades of illegitimate rule by the military.

“Many Nigerians fought for this democracy and some paid the supreme sacrifices for us to have the hard-won democracy in the country today.’’

To that end, DanSalami said the groups urge the president-elect to form an inclusive government where the youths and other groups who did not vote for him are included in his administration.

We urge him to address the suffering of the Nigerian masses and the chronic unemployment of the youths. We believe that the Nigeria of our dream is possible.

“And the Nigerians in the Diaspora stand ready to contribute our quotas to actualise a new Nigeria, if and when called upon,’’ he said.

I will challenge Tinubu victory. Atiku said.

0

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, vowed to challenge the victory of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, in last Saturday’s presidential election.

Speaking in an ongoing press conference in Abuja, Atiku described the election that produced Tinubu as president-elect as a “rape of democracy”.

“This battle to right the wrongs of Saturday is not about me. It is a continuation of my battles to deepen democracy and for a better life for our people. It is about the future of Nigerian youths.

I know that Nigerians, especially the youth, are traumatized by the developments, but I want to urge them to conduct themselves peacefully. Like I have done over the years, I assure you that I will commit the rest of my life in ensuring that true democracy, which affirms the supremacy of your votes and your will, will take firm footing and guarantee a stable, prosperous and peaceful Nigeria. This is more so as Nigeria represents the hope of Africa and the Black World,” he said.

Atiku said that the 2023 presidential election presented Nigeria with a rare opportunity for the country’s reset but was allegedly truncated by the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The 2023 presidential election presented our nation and its people with the greatest opportunity for a reset. We had everything going for us: a legal framework in the 2022 Electoral Act and the BVAS technology. The enthusiasm of Nigerians to turn out and in large numbers was an added bonus.

“However, the dreams and aspirations of Nigerians who braced all the challenges to go and cast their votes on Saturday, 25th of February, 2023, were shattered by the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which failed to live up to expectations. The weekend election was neither free nor fair.

Preliminary assessments indicate that it is the worst conducted elections since the return to democratic rule. The manipulation and fraud that attended this election was unprecedented in the history of our nation.

“I can still not understand why the electoral umpire was in such a hurry to conclude collation and announcement of the result, given the number of complaints of irregularities of bypassing of the BVAS, failure of uploading to the IREV, and unprecedented cancellations and disenfranchisement of millions of voters in breach of the Electoral Act and the commission’s own guidelines. It was indeed a rape of democracy.

“Having consulted with leaders of our party and Nigerians from different walks of life, I have come to the conclusion that the processes and outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly election of last Saturday was grossly flawed in every material particular, and as such must be challenged.”

Fayose Dumps PDP, Says Ayu Misleading Atiku

0

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, on Wednesday, adding that he was quitting partisan politics.

His announcement came hours after his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, lost the presidential election to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Fayose, who announced his resignation while appearing as a guest on Arise TV, also revealed that the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, rejected the proposition by the aggrieved G-5 governors that he should only serve one term in office.

Announcing his resignation, Fayose said, “From today, I stay off the PDP.”

When asked if that was a resignation, he said, “I say it here, from today on, I step aside because I must be talking like a leader in this country.

“I had issued on my Twitter handle, even in the month, whether it was January or December that I warned the PDP of this problem. If not resolved, it will consume this party. I told them there was danger ahead. Watch it.”

Speaking further, Fayose blamed the National Chairman of the party, Iyiorcha Ayu, for the failure of the party at the polls.

He urged the party to accept defeat, alleging that they were sponsoring protests against the outcome of the election.

“This Ayu was the one who led Atiku to the gutters. They took him to the gutters. You see when a man cannot come out. At 80, what does he want to do after that?”

Reacting to a video showing members of a Civil Society Organisation who protested against the outcome of the election in Abuja, Fayose said, “Let me first fault the people I saw here today, that are calling themselves civil society. No, they are PDP members.

The person that first spoke on behalf of protesters here is Yusuf from Oyo State; he is a PDP member contesting in 2019. He is a good brother of mine. The other young lady is also from Oyo State, they are all PDP members. If you see a protest rally, you will see the trickiness of the protest rally.

These are PDP agents. These are people doing this to just show Nigerians that we are not happy. PDP has been sponsoring a lot of people to protest and giving them money. They go and carry people from somewhere; give them N1,000 each, and sometimes they will beat themselves. You can count the number of protesters here at an election that attracted almost 22 million people. You count these people as protesting,” he said.

Speaking on the governorship election in Lagos State, he said, “The PDP candidate in Lagos is like people doing theatre to me. Lagos business is serious business. There are lots of challenges in Lagos. So I enjoin everybody in Lagos to return this Sanwo-Olu and stay off of the PDP.”

Full speech: Obi breaks silence after election and prepares for trial

0

The Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi broke his silence Thursday on last Saturday’s election results, saying the election was marred by corruption.

The former Governor of Anambra State told a global press conference in Abuja that the nomination process for Bola Tinubu as the newly elected president at the All Progressive Congress was “programmed for a specific outcome.”

However, he promised to study all legal options for restoring his “powers” and claim victory in the presidential election.

Below is the full text of the address:

“Again, my dear people,

Let me correct an impression because I’m seeing some people saying in the media that I released one news or the other. I have never, directly or indirectly, spoken or released any message since after voting on the 25th. My last comment to the media was immediately after voting on the 25th, and I’ve never done so until now. So, whatever you see in the media please disregard. It’s not coming from me directly or indirectly.

“This is my first time of speaking to the media, and I thank all of you for your understanding.

For me, it is a very simple thing to speak to Nigerians who on the 25th of February trooped out en masses as committed citizens to participate in what all of us have called an existential election, for a supposedly free, fair, credible presidential and national assembly election. We give thanks to God.

For me, the number one thing is gratitude. Gratitude to God Almighty that continues to protect and bless our dear country Nigeria. Number two is gratitude. Gratitude to Nigerians that participated in the election, answering the call as true citizens in our dear country. Number three is gratitude to those of you Nigerians, especially the youth, that believed and worked tirelessly for a new Nigeria, I thank them for their hard work. Gratitude to the Obidients, Youths, those who believe that a new Nigeria is possible, and I say to them that a new Nigeria is possible, and we will work for that new Nigeria.

“The resilience, the hard work, for a new Nigeria should not wane. Datti and I remain committed to that new Nigeria. I know how they will be feeling now because of the way the elections have come and gone. The commitment of Nigerians, even in the face of unwarranted attacks, is a testimony that a new Nigeria is indeed possible. I look at people like Lady Jennifer who was stabbed but insisted on voting, and that gives me courage to believe that a new Nigeria is indeed possible –and there are so many other Nigerians.

“The election that we just witnessed has been conducted and results announced as programmed. It is a clear violation of the electoral rules and guidelines as we were promised. This election did not meet the minimum standard expected of a free, transparent, credible fair election. It will go down as one of the most controversial elections ever conducted in Nigeria.
“The good and hardworking people of Nigeria have again been robbed by our supposed leaders whom they trusted. However, very humbly, I must appeal to all Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and conduct themselves in the most responsible manner. Please be assured that Datti and I, and indeed all of us, this is not the end but the beginning of the journey for the birth of a new Nigeria. Datti Baba-Ahmed and I remain undaunted and committed to the project of a new Nigeria that will be built on honesty, transparency, fairness, justice, equity.

All the above starts with a process. The process through which people come into office is far more fundamental, more important than what they do thereafter. It is my belief that if you must answer “His Excellency”, the process through which you arrive to office must be excellent.

“We must now require that we do the right things. It has to generate the confidence and moral authority to lead. As you know, the destruction of a society begins and gradually progresses when we act rascally, with the deliberate manipulation of the rule of law and the suppression of the will of the people. During my campaign we have been saying that we will govern by the rule of law because we know what not doing that will bring about.

“I assure the good people of Nigeria that we will explore all legal and peaceful options to recall our mandate.

“We won the election, and we will prove it to Nigerians.

“Please, do not despair. We have elections coming up on the 11th. I enjoin you to go out. Campaign. Come out and vote in that election. We still have so many massive support out there that we need for our subnational and state assemblies. Please, come out and be part of that election. I assure you that I will be part of it. I assure you that I am totally committed to a better future in this country, and nothing will stop that. Datti’s commitment, my commitment, is total.

“Be rest assured that your support will not be in vain and you will not find us wanting. We must build a better Nigeria where Nigerian youth will be happy, glad to call their own country.

“Thank you and may God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
