Gender Advocate, Rita Daniels Rallies Support For Lauretta Onochie, Decries Attacks

The leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo (women wing) Chief Mrs. Rita Daniels Chukwuji says she is in solidarity with the Board Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Lauretta Onochie saying she has demonstrated capacity to pilot the affairs of the commission.

Speaking with correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday, Chief Mrs. Daniels said Onochie is a sad example of how women have been subjected to unwarranted attacks in the country just for being females, calling on Nigerians to have a re-orientation of the mind.

She said the series of disenchantment that greeted the nomination of Onochie as NDDC chairman because of her closeness to President Muhammadu Buhari as his aide was needless and resonates how women have been limited by the system from giving their best in efforts to serve the country.

As someone with the interest of women, I stand in solidarity with Chief Lauretta Onochie, the Board Chairman of NDDC and all women who have faced society-induced attacks because of their gender.

Her recent political persecution, including her suspension from her party which has now been reversed is a clear indication that gender-based attacks are very common in Nigeria and must be dealt with.

“In a short while, the once comatose NDDC is now gaining a new life, fulfilling the aims and objectives for which it was created. Kudos to the first female chairman ever.

“I appeal to women across the country to support theirs and shun antagonistic gestures that will reverse the gains being made to have more women representation in government”, she said.

She further described Onochie as a grassroots mobilizer who has attracted the love and support of Anioma women through several philanthropic and humanitarian projects she had embarked upon.

She also called on other women across the country to demonstrate solidarity with Onochie and all other women facing persecution because of their gender.

The women of Anioma are also drumming support for their daughter while applauding her for consistency and impact in the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

MOVIE REVIEW: Gangs of Lagos: Finally, a crime thriller that captures Isale Eko’s reality

MOVIE REVIEW: Gangs of Lagos: Finally, a crime thriller that captures Isale Eko’s reality.

Every year, there is always a movie that leaves viewers wanting more, be it a sequel or a series. Although it might seem too early to conclude which of Nollywood’s 2023 releases has managed to capture viewers’ hearts, it’s undoubtedly that Gangs of Lagos falls into the list of contenders.

Movie Title: Gangs of Lagos

Release Date: 7th April 2023

Director: Jade Osiberu

Runtime: 2 hours plus

Cast: Tobi Bakare, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chike Osebuka, Chioma Chukwuka, Olarotimi Fakunle, Chioma Chukwuka, Bimbo Ademoye, Iyabo Ojo, Zlatan, Debo “Mr Maraconi” Adedayo, Yhemolee, Pasuma, Toyin Abraham, Tayo Faniran, Damilola Ogunsi, and Funke Williams

From the same creative mind that brought a new type of action thriller to our screens in 2022 with Brotherhood comes Gangs of Lagos, another crime thriller that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. There is something about watching Jade Osiberu movies that immerse you in a world that feels yet new. Gangs of Lagos, being the first Amazon Prime Video Original film, knocked the ball out of the park.

Whether it was the spot-on casting choices, cinematography, or stunts, the film has set the bar high for producers in the industry.

The movie’s plot revolves around a group of friends to a life of crime in the famous and daunting streets of Isale Eko. After losing loved ones, they set out on a quest for vengeance to right the wrongs of the gangs on the road. Despite possessing many unique qualities, including an authentic representation of Lagos street life, Gangs of Lagos does have a few flaws, ranging from dialogues to the storyline. Let’s dive into the review.

The Gist

The beginning scenes show a young boy named Obalola (Tobi Bakare) threatening to kill a woman if she refused to surrender her purse. Initially thinking he was joking, she declined, but upon spotting a knife, she accepted. This incident caused him to be summoned to the “leader of the streets,” as the woman is an “omo aiye.”

Due to his courage and intellect, a gang leader named Nino is interested in him, becoming his second father figure. Unfortunately, Nino dies, causing Obalola to rely on a life of crime with his best friends, Gift (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) and Ify (Chike Osebuka). They start to work for a greedy and ruthless gang leader, Kazeem(Olarotimi Fakunle).

Things get heated when Kazeem murders one of the gang leaders, pinning it on Oba’s friends. This accusation leads to his death, which enrages Oba and the street members, and later causes a war where bloodshed and destruction are the order of the day.

The Good

A significant highlight of this film is the excellent casting choices. It was refreshing to see Adesua switch from a pretty face into a tomboy with ruthless qualities as a man. Tobi Bakare also delivers an award-winning performance as Obalola, along with Kazeem, who embodied what it takes to be a villain of the street. How can we forget the range Chioma brought as she delivered a tear-moving monologue, and Iyabo Ojo, who, although appearing in a few scenes, was still able to express the fierceness that exists in a typical Nigerian mother? Lastly, Tayo Faniran made us fall in love with Nino, ignoring his shortcomings.

The cinematography for Gangs of Lagos is top-tier, as the various elements make each scene aesthetically appealing for the nature of its genre. An additional ambitious cinematic part that paid off was the locations. It is remarkable to see that the movie was shot at places that can be found in the real-life Isale Eko. Gangs of Lagos, to a certain extent, also accurately portrays what street life is like paying close attention to details that will keep viewers interested in the movie. For example, there was a lot of symbolism about the current situation of the country, especially the recent elections. The themes of political thuggery and corruption were heavily implied in many scenes.

Finally, let’s talk about the stunts and effects. Gangs of Lagos is arguably the first film to feature a professional execution of deeds. This, added to the realistic blood effects, would probably make it every Nollywood director’s guide on how to shoot an action film correctly.

The Bad

Gangs of Lagos radiates with potential, but it still has a lot of room for improvement. Some scenes felt too dragged out, especially the ones with the stunts. It was almost as if the producers were trying to shove the fact that a lot of money, time, and effort went into the actions, so showing them more would give viewers time to appreciate them.

The storyline appears to have been done before. Although it would be hypocritical not to acknowledge the effort to put a new spin on it, it felt like an extra dose of creativity could have made it better.

A few dialogues also felt bland. Either the words had little impact in the context of the situation, or the delivery felt off.

The idea of making ‘Gangs of Lagos’ a movie is another issue. It would have been so much better as a TV series because then we would see character development not just for Obalola or Gift but also for people like Kazeem.

Final Verdict!

Stream it! Gangs of Lagos is one of the few films that relied on proper research to tell a story most Nigerians do not fully understand.

Verdict: 8/10

Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, commonly known as Davido, recounted how his father, Chief Adedeji, sent police several times to arrest him early in his career.

The OBO singer said that his father was initially against his musical career and wanted him to focus on his education.

Davido spoke about this while introducing Ebro on the New York Hot 97FM morning show after the album’s release. The broadcaster shared Friday’s interview on YouTube.

Davido said that his father sent the police several times to arrest him and cancel the concerts he was supposed to play.

He sent the police to arrest me… just like he saw the billboard; For example, “Davido is there and Wizkid is there.” He will send the police to arrest everyone. If you are there, show organizers (you will be arrested),” he told the FM radio station, and he and the host laughed.

When asked why his father did this, Davido replied, “That’s why I have to go back to school.”

He just kept it. Then you have time. Then I realized: “Oh, this is exciting!” They (the police) came and arrested me. Then I’m on my mobile phone, and whoever took the phone’s keychain, my song! I said “it’s me”. He said, “Are you Davido?” I said yes! And he let me go.”

He said after then he dropped a record that became big in Africa. “The president was playing it,” he boasted.

When the singer was asked when his dad stopped getting him arrested, Davido said, “I finished school. But I had to do like a part-time stuff.”

He noted that his father didn’t hate music, he wanted him to be serious with his education.

“Not that he hated music, he just wanted me to go to school. And I feel like, he wants that whatever I’m gonna do, I have to be successful,” he added.

He said his father now called him to ask what next, adding that his dad was proud of him, and he was his number one fan.

“He’s calling, asking me what next. He’s like over-asking questions,” he added.

Olarotimi Fakunle’s portrayal of Kazeem in the movie Gangs of Lagos.

0

Not much has been said about Olarotimi Fakunle’s portrayal of Kazeem in the movie Gangs of Lagos.

Olarotimi Fakunle

Fakunle is a multi-talented actor, director, and producer who has played numerous strong characters in both film and theatre. He is best known for his roles in Ajochie, Paper Boat, Last Days, Run, and Omoye.

Fakunle has also worked on several projects based on the works of some of Nigeria’s most respected playwrights, including The Trials of Brother Jero by Wole Soyinka and Our Husband has Gone Mad Again and The Gods are Not to Blame by Ola Rotimi.

Fakunle is a king of stage acting and a darling of the Africa Magic series. He is an exceptional actor on those platforms, but in Gangs of Lagos, he transcends all platforms. He was born to play the role of Kazeem, and he delivers until his last breath. Fakunle’s performance as Kazeem is a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.

He brings depth and nuance to the character, making him both sympathetic and menacing. Fakunle’s portrayal of Kazeem is a standout performance in a movie filled with exceptional acting. It is a shame that not much has been said about it, but it is a performance that deserves recognition and praise.

Chelsea collapsed when Lampard returned.

0

Frank Lampard’s return started with a loss for Chelsea as his first game back in charge ended in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves on Saturday.

Lampard made a surprise return to Stamford Bridge on Thursday when he was appointed until the end of the season following Graham Potter’s sacking last Sunday after just seven months in charge.

But the ex-Chelsea midfielder, who was dismissed by the club’s former owner Roman Abramovich in January 2021, could not provide an immediate lift for the Blues.

Chelsea, on their third manager this season following Potter’s exit and Thomas Tuchel’s sacking in September, remain 11th after a fourth consecutive game without a win.

The presence of Lampard, Chelsea’s record goal scorer, did little to inspire his players and Matheus Nunes won it for Wolves in the 32nd minute with a superb half-volley into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Sacked by lowly Everton in January after less than a year in charge, Lampard will now turn his attention to Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at holders Real Madrid.

Why was I denied entry to the US, ”said the comedian Bovi about the confrontation with the American visa officer.

0

Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has opened up about his infamous clash with a visa-issuing officer at the American embassy, which led to his ban from entering the United States.

Speaking during an Instagram live session with his fans, Bovi expressed his disappointment at the way the incident was blown out of proportion by the media.

The Delta State-born comedian revealed that the visa officer he met at the embassy was very unfriendly, but he did not provide specific details of what transpired between them.

He stated that he was embarrassed when the story was amplified in the media and wondered how anyone could gain access to a visa officer since they are protected by a glass wall.

Recalling the incident, Bovi said he only asked the officer how many visas he had obtained in the last ten years, considering he had always had two American visas in that period.

However, the officer reportedly replied, “There is a new sheriff in town,” before pushing back Bovi’s passport and that of his wife.

The way everything went, it escalated in the media. They started to have different versions of the story,” Bovi recounted during an interview on #withChude.

The popular comedian also spoke about his strained relationship with his father while growing up and revealed that he was determined to raise his own kids differently.

I don’t want to raise my kids the way I grew up under my old man, so I am trying to be different,” he said.
