Tribunal: Banky W considers it a miraculous opportunity to have a second chance

0

Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, an aspiring member of the House of Representatives and a notable artist, expressed his deep appreciation on Wednesday for the Election Petitions Tribunal’s decision to mandate a re-run election in the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos State.

During the February 2023 election, the Independent National Electoral Commission initially declared Mr. Thaddeus Atta of the Labour Party as the winner with 24,075 votes, while Banky W and Ibrahim Obanikoro garnered 18,668 and 16,901 votes, respectively.

Subsequently, Banky W, representing the Peoples Democratic Party, and Ibrahim Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress filed petitions contesting the election results.

In a recent ruling, the tribunal deemed the February election inconclusive and instructed INEC to conduct a supplementary election within 90 days in 33 polling units where voting did not occur.

Appearing on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program, Banky W expressed, “For me, it’s nothing short of a miracle that we are given another opportunity to conclude the election.

This underscores the resilience, faith, and collective determination of the people who are committed to rebuilding our democracy.”

He stressed the significance of allowing people to participate in the electoral process and highlighted the frustration felt by many who were unable to cast their votes in the previous election due to various issues, including violence and voter suppression.

Banky W concluded by emphasizing the importance of the court’s decision to ensure that every vote is counted and every citizen’s voice is heard, regardless of their political affiliation.

The father of MohBad reveals a dream he had about his son just two days before his tragic passing

Mr. Joseph Ayoba, the father of the late artist known as Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Ayoba, has shared a haunting dream he had just two days before his son’s tragic passing.

The popular ‘Ko Por Ke’ singer sadly passed away on a Tuesday and was laid to rest in Ikorodu the following day, a heart-wrenching farewell attended by grieving family members, friends, and sympathizers.

In an emotional interview with online blogger @og_baba1 on Wednesday, Mr. Ayoba characterized his relationship with his late son as more akin to friendship than a traditional father-son dynamic.

He also recounted their last moments together, recalling a visit to Mohbad’s home the preceding Saturday where they enjoyed a meal together.

Mr. Ayoba fondly referred to Mohbad as “Oladimeji,” signifying a close bond, stating, “Mohbad is my friend. I called him Oladimeji (meaning my second) because I’m the only son of my parents. We were close.

The last day we met, which was last Saturday, I went to his house, and we dined together. When I was leaving, he also gave me some money, as he always did.”

However, a shadow of foreboding loomed over Mr. Ayoba as he revealed a distressing dream he had experienced two days prior to the tragic event. In the dream, he witnessed someone attempting to harm him with a gunshot.

Little did he know that this premonition would foreshadow the devastating loss of his son.

Regarding the circumstances leading to his son’s untimely demise, Mr. Ayoba shared, “According to what I heard from people, though I don’t believe it, was that an auxiliary nurse administered an injection to him, and that could have led to anything.”

In the wake of Mohbad’s passing, an outpouring of tributes continues to flood in from colleagues and devoted fans across various social media platforms, commemorating the talented artist’s life and artistry.

Nigeria expediting agro-export processes as Lilypond terminal commences full-scale operations

0

Nigeria is streamlining agricultural exports by initiating full-scale operations at the Lilypond terminal.

As a result, the post-harvest loss of perishable agro-allied products is diminishing.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) also reports an uptick in the export of Nigerian commodities via the nation’s seaports, with exporters opting for Nigerian ports over neighboring countries.

During an on-site evaluation of the Lilypond Export Processing Terminal Ijora, Mohammed Bello-Koko, Managing Director of the NPA, explained that these export processing terminals serve as hubs where exporters can bring, sort, process, and document their exports before they proceed to the port for shipment.

Bello-Koko expressed satisfaction with the increase in container processing at Lilypond, which has surged by 60% in the last nine days, now handling about 300 export containers.

He praised the Nigeria Customs Services for their support and noted that discussions with Customs have led to improvements in export processing procedures.

Bello-Koko emphasized the importance of seamless export processing for Nigeria’s competitiveness and timely delivery to destinations.

Addressing issues like bad roads and extortion, the NPA is collaborating with various government agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, Customs, and NAFDAC, to educate exporters on requirements and reduce delays.

Olatunji Baale, Managing Director of the Diamond Star Export Processing Terminal, added that their terminal has already gated over 300 export boxes into the port in the past nine days and can handle up to 500 export boxes weekly.

They prioritize online interactions with customers and timely release of export boxes.

While there were occasional electronic call-up system issues, the NPA is giving precedence to export processing.

The NPA has established tariffs for Export Processing Terminals to prevent double charges and reduce export costs.

Additionally, an NPA task force escorts export boxes to prevent extortion and delays during port entry.

Amidst rising inflation, developers are increasingly embracing funding models that involve sharing the risks

To navigate the challenges posed by surging inflation, real estate developers are adopting innovative funding approaches that allow them to share risks with their financial backers.

These developers favor equity partners over traditional bank loans because they believe it’s more attractive to have partners invest money and share both profits and risks, rather than borrowing at high costs without the lender sharing any risks.

Credit facilities for housing projects have become increasingly unsustainable due to rising interest rates. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has responded to inflation by raising interest rates from 11.5 percent in January to 18.5 percent in July. As a result, commercial bank loan interest rates now range from 28 percent to 30 percent, following the recent increase in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR).

In addition, Nigeria has experienced six consecutive months of soaring inflation, reaching 24.08 percent in July, the highest since September 2005. This has had a detrimental impact on building material prices.

Given these circumstances, obtaining loans from banks is no longer feasible due to high inflation and interest rates, as well as the mismatch between short-term loans and long-term projects.

Grace Ibhakhomu, CEO of Lifecard Investment and a property developer, advocates for co-ownership and lists alternative funding sources like private equity finance, crowdfunding, bonds, co-funding, and partnerships with interested parties. However, she acknowledges that these sources may have their challenges but are generally considered less stringent than bank loans.

Developers also face eligibility requirements and bureaucracy when seeking real estate development loans, as exemplified by the now-unsustainable Estate Development Loan (EDL) from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

Anthony Adekunle, an estate developer, shared his negative experience with the EDL, citing excessive paperwork and insider abuse that led to minimal return on investment.

On the other hand, John Beecroft, CEO of Tetramanor Limited, suggests that crowdfunding can be a viable option. He emphasizes the importance of setting up a project profile online, utilizing social media and personal networks to raise funds, and ensuring clear loan terms between parties.

Beecroft also recalls an incident where a bank initially offered a 17 percent interest rate but later increased it to 27 percent, making it unfeasible for their project. They considered foreign equity investors as an alternative.

In addition to high-interest rates, rising material costs, particularly for cement, have become a major concern for developers. Ayo Ibaru, CEO of Northcourt Real Estate, highlights a 70 percent increase in the prices of paints, reinforcement, sanitary fittings, sand, roofing sheets, tiles, and granite. He notes that these rising costs, along with expensive urban land acquisition, pose challenges for both public and private sector housing developers. As a result, low-income tenants may increasingly move to low-income areas as rents and inflation rise.

Suspects flee with merchandise worth N40.6 million

0

The Ogun State Police Command is actively pursuing Joseph Nwakpe and accomplices over the alleged theft and diversion of Knorr seasoning products valued at N40.6 million.

According to insider information, Nwakpe and others were contracted by a transport manager named Pedro Okanlawon from Lap Global Resource. Their task was to transport 2,085 cases of Knorr seasoning from Agbara to Onitsha and Port Harcourt.

The delivery was carried out using a distinctive custom-painted Mercedes Benz truck with Registration Number 3364N244722 and Engine Number 3364N244722. The truck bore the inscriptions “Never give up” and “Ifeomachukwu” on the front view.

Okanlawon, a transport manager based in Lagos, repeatedly attempted to contact Nwakpe and his associates via phone to inquire about their progress. However, all efforts to locate the suspects proved futile, leading the victim to file a formal complaint at a police station in Agbara.

Following a thorough police investigation, the truck’s driver, identified as Danladi Suleiman from the Ayetoro area of Agbara/Badagry Expressway, was apprehended on September 5, 2023.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the arrested suspect had already confessed to the crime. The police are currently conducting further investigations.

A lecturer at Rivers Polytechnic expresses frustration over the withholding of their salary for the past 20 months

0

A lecturer at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt, Solomon Tamunotonye, has raised concerns about the institution’s management withholding his salary for 20 months.

The Polytechnic initially suspended Tamunotonye for three months due to allegations of harassment and exploitation of a 200-level female student, Blessing Audu.

Subsequently, the case was referred to a committee for investigation.

However, Tamunotonye expressed frustration that the management, months later, asked him to return to work and submit a written apology without disclosing the committee’s findings.

He refused to write an apology, insisting that the allegations were false, which led to the suspension of his salary.

He maintained that he didn’t see the need for an apology letter, as the polytechnic’s regulations prescribe dismissal for lecturers involved in sexual harassment, not a written apology.

Tamunotonye also alleged that on December 16, 2022, he was attacked by three polytechnic employees who attempted to destroy evidence related to his case.

The matter has since gone to court, and Tamunotonye is seeking support from Nigerians, the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and civil society groups, as he has resorted to doing menial jobs to sustain himself.

The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Chris Woke, declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
